出国税は19年に創設し、現在1人1000円を徴収している。23年度の税収は399億円だった。高市早苗首相は首相就任前の9月30日、自民党総裁選の討論会で「出国税を3000円に引き上げてでも使いたい」と発言した。政府は交通機関の混雑やマナー違反といったオーバーツーリズム対策を強化するなどとして、3000円以上への引き上げを検討している。
ただし、出国税は日本人も支払うため、引き上げが日本人の旅行控えを招く懸念もある。
