警察と鉄道運輸機構によりますと、現場は北海道新幹線の札幌市への延伸に向けた工事現場です。
当時、円柱状に束ねられた鉄筋をトレーラーから降ろす作業中で、鉄筋とトレーラーのロックを外すと荷崩れし、近くにいた男性作業員の顔を直撃、男性作業員は死亡しました。
その後の警察の調べで、死亡したのは札幌市中央区の会社員、工藤正人（まさと）さん57歳と判明しました。
工藤さんの顔を直撃した鉄筋の束は、長さ8.6メートル、直径１メートル、重さ1.3トンで、新幹線の線路の高架橋の支柱に使われるものだったということです。
警察は現場の安全管理の問題を含め、引き続き当時の状況などを詳しく調べています。
