少子化について語られるとき、その要因に挙げられるのは、たいてい「女性」である。
一方で、「男性の教育レベルの上昇が出生率にどのように影響するかについては、ほとんど語られていない」。

スキルベックは著書のなかで「2006年から2010年の調査で、米国では40歳の男性の4人に1人の割合で子供がいなかったのに対し、女性は約7人に1人だった」と書いている。

要因のひとつには「女性がますます選択的になっていること」、つまり「（異性愛者の）女性にとって『適切な』男性が不足していること」があるという。
ちなみにこの問題は、北欧のなかでも特にフィンランドで顕著であるようだ。
「世界で最もジェンダー平等が進んでいる国でさえ、女性は比較的高収入で高学歴の男性を好む傾向がある」

労働市場などで、機会に恵まれない若い男性を支援する政策は、出生率の低下を改善するうえで「一度限りの現金のインセンティブよりも重要かもしれない」と、スキルベックは同紙に述べている。
