小室氏はパラリーガル時代に勤務していた法律事務所から留学中も給与相当額を提供されていたという。
前出の『週刊朝日』の記事は、こう解説する。
〈小室さんの留学については、法律事務所が3年間の滞在費を負担するとしていた。（中略）法律事務所の
事情を知る人物によれば、「眞子さまとの交際がなければ、ごくごく普通の事務職員。なぜそこまでするのか」
という意見も、所内で渦巻いているという。
そうした空気を受けてのことなのか、小室さんの生活費は貸与へと変更になったという〉
年収450万円の3年分なら、総額1350万円。この報道が事実であるなら、小室氏は就職後、
返済の義務があるということだ。
また、眞子内親王との新生活にも資金が必要となる。
「結婚式・披露宴は、本来なら宮家と新郎側が話し合い、それぞれの負担額を決めます。もし小室家が
“支払えない”と主張し、ほとんどを皇族費から支出することになれば、さらなる批判は免れない。
また、眞子さまと暮らす新居の準備も必要です。セキュリティを考えれば、賃貸というわけにはいかない。
やはり眞子さまの一時金1億4000万円を充てるしかないのではないか。小室さんなら、
1LDKの実家マンションで佳代さんらとの同居を提案する可能性すらある」（宮内庁担当記者）
