１６日午後３時ごろ、沖縄県宜野湾市赤道の国道３３０号で「大きなカメが横断している」と通行人から１１０番通報があった。
宜野湾署によると、体長約７０センチ、体重約５０キロのケヅメリクガメが同日中に署へ送られ、１７日に飼い主の元へ無事に届けられた。

カメはアフリカ原産でペットとして流通していて、世界で３番目に大きいリクガメという。

署によると、飼い主とは別に大型のカメを飼っている男性が、自分のペットが逃げたと思い込んでたまたま付近を通り掛かり、横断したケヅメリクガメを発見。
持ち帰ったが、ペットは自宅にいたため警察へ連絡。１６日午後４時すぎに署が保護した。

カメは推定２８歳で、３年前から飼い主の男性（６１）＝宜野湾市＝の自宅で飼育されているという。

１７日午後４時前、引き取りに来た男性のトラックの荷台に乗せられたカメは少しほっとした様子。

男性は「無事に見つかって良かった」。署は「カメの横断が大きな事故につながらず、本当に良かった。ペットの飼育には気を付けてほしい」と呼び掛けた。
