入社4年目で初めての結婚記念日の日。
社内でトラブルが発生した。
下手したら全員会社に泊まりになるかも知れないという修羅場なのに、結婚記念日なので帰らしてくださいとは絶対に言えなかった。

5時を回った頃、T課長が俺を呼びつけ、封筒を渡して、「これをK物産に届けろ」と言う。
K物産は、隣の県にある得意先で、今から車で出ても8時までに着けるかどうかすら分からない。
「届けたら直帰していいから」と言うが、直帰も何も、K物産に届けて家まで帰ったら、きっと11時は過ぎるだろう。

文句を言いたかったが、「わかりました」と言って封筒を預かった。
中身を見ようとすると「中身は車の中で見ろ。さっさと行け！」とつれないT課長。
不満たらたらの声で「行ってきます」というと、課内の同情の目に送られて駐車場へ向かった。
車に乗り込み、封筒を開けると、一枚の紙切れが。

「結婚記念日おめでとう。今日はこのまま帰りなさい」

と書かれていた。
会社に入って初めて泣いた。

その翌年、T課長は実家の家業を継ぐために退社した。
送別会の席でお礼を言ったら「そんなことあったか？」と空とぼけていた。
T課長、お元気でおられるだろうか。
