むしろ超大国じゃ

●歴史的に見ても常に世界でTOP10内には必ず入る人口
（現在でも総人口11位）

●国内総生産が世界3位

●軍事力指数が世界TOP5に入る

●国土面積は確かにそこまで大きくはないが
普通に欧州の大国レベルはある。（決して小さくない）

「極東の小国」とか自虐的になるのいい加減辞めんか？？
どこからどう見ても日本は超大国だからな？

まことに小さな国が、開化期を迎えようとしている。

小さなといえば、明治初年の日本ほど小さな国はなかったであろう。
産業といえば農業しかなく、人材といえば三百年のあいだ読書階級であった旧士族しかなかった。
明治維新によって日本人は初めて近代的な「国家」というものをもった。

たれもが「国民」になった。

不慣れながら「国民」になった日本人たちは、日本史上の最初の体験者として、その新鮮さに昂揚した。
この痛々しいばかりの昂揚が分からなければ、この段階の歴史は分からない。
社会のどういう階層の、どういう家の子でも、ある一定の資格をとるために必要な記憶力と根気さえあれば、博士にも、官吏にも、教師にも、軍人にも、成り得た。

この時代の明るさは、こういう楽天主義（オプティミズム）から来ている。

今から思えば、実に滑稽なことに、コメと絹の他に主要産業のない国家の連中は、ヨーロッパ先進国と同じ海軍を持とうとした。陸軍も同様である。 財政の成り立つはずがない。

が、ともかくも近代国家を作り上げようというのは、元々維新成立の大目的であったし、維新後の新国民の少年のような希望であった。
