「中居は一時、貯金額が100億円と週刊誌に書かれましたが、『オレは三桁（100億円）まではいかないよ』とテレビ番組で否定。『三桁あるのは（明石家）さんまさんぐらいじゃないの』と、笑って否定していました。とはいえ、おそらくは100億円に近い90億円くらいありそうです」（ジャニーズライター）
かつて長者番付が公表されていた時代、中居の推定年収は7億円以上といわれた時期もあった。第一線で活躍すること20年以上、100億円前後の貯蓄があっても不思議はない。
「さんまはケチで有名。でも中居は『倹約家』で、さんまとは違う。子供のころに貧しかったことも明かしていますし、ぜいたくをしない主義は好感が持てます。実際、ロケ弁を持ち帰って晩酌のおつまみにするなどは、本人も語っています」（同・ライター）

そんな中居は、去る1月18日放送の『中居正広 ON＆ON AIR』（ニッポン放送）で、リスナーから1カ月の出費額などを質問された。 「とっておきのぜいたくは何ですか？」との問いに、中居は「そばやトンカツを食べに行くときに値段見ないっていうのはぜいたくだよね」と一言。「自慢じゃないけど、ボク、お金減らないです」と付け加えた。
「中居はキャバクラなどにも行かないし、レストランも高級な店には行きません。食べ物に高いカネを使うのはムダだというのです」（同）
1カ月の出費はというと、好きなお酒を買いに行くスーパーでは月に3万円ほどしか使わず「オレ、1日1000円しか使わないの」と豪語。結局、 昼食代などを含めても、食費はだいたい「月5万円くらい」なのだという。
「以前、中居は〝結婚したくないジャニーズ〟の1位だった。1円のムダ使いも奥さんに許さないって感じで。去年、1本100円ぐらいの焼き鳥屋に入ったことをサラっと話していましたが、妙にリアルでしたね」（女性誌記者）
中居は「オレ、結婚できないよ」とも語っているが、奥さんの大変さを思っての発言だとすれば、それも実にリアルな話だ。
